Old Granny Fox Thornton W. 1874-1965 Burgess, Harrison Cady 9781143976926 Books Reviews

When I was a child my grandmother gave me a copy. I was so excited to find the book on the . Now, my grandchildren can enjoy the same lessons and I did. These are great stories to help young ones learn what is right, what is best and the consequences if the lessons aren't learned.
A nice little Dover book that my grandson really enjoyed. He is 10 years old but I think aN 8 year old would enjoy it as well.
My son adores the Burgess Books
My kids love Thornton Burgess's books. We have read many books about the creatures in the Green Meadows, Green Forest and the Old orchard over the last year. They really like all the different characters/animals in the book. All the characters come to life and have their good and bad traits, just like people. This book, like the others, are excellent for kids. These books teach the kids a lot about nature. I am amazed at the things my kids learn from Mr Burgess's books. Part of the story is discussing how its not easy catching your dinner every day, so there is talk about hunger. This has lead to the kids asking about how animals eat and get their food.

The kindle edition seems to be missing some text though. There is one or two spots were Granny Fox's saying at the beginning of the chapter is cut out. This doesn't effect the story and my kids don't notice it. Unlike the Bowser the Hound book, where every chapter had a saying there are only a couple in this book. This is the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.

There is also no table of contents for the book. Its a free book so I don't really care, but some may.
I read Old Granny Fox to my kids at bedtime, and its short episodic chapters usually left them wanting more, unless they were *really* tired. Burgess is a little pedagogic at times, but that doesn't detract from the clever foxes and their adventures.
This was such a wonderful read. The author dispenses wisdom to young people in that rare and special way that avoids making it feel like bad medicine going down.

"Old Granny Fox" is not the first in Burgess' series, but it isn't a bad place to start, either. Most of his stories, though loosely interconnected, still allow the reader to jump in at any point.

Bear in mind, there are presently two versions of this book on . One of them (Old Granny Fox) is not completely formatted properly. That one is still a good reading copy, but due to the formatting, excises many of the witty sayings in each chapter.

This version is the (free) one to get, although it also has none of the original illustrations. There are other copies of Burgess' animal stories with the artwork on , but none of them appear to be free. Most are only a buck or two, so if you enjoy "Old Granny Fox," you could still find plenty of the illustrated versions of Burgess' writings in format on the cheap.
This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. Plus, unlike many of these Dover editions of Thornton Burgess' books, it has honest-to-god original Harrison Cady illustrations.

Harrison Cady did two sets of drawings for this title; 8 color ones, printed on plates, for Little, Brown, of which 4 were later used for Grosset & Dunlap, printed in B&W on plates. Then, Cady redrew those 4 as line drawings for Grosset & Dunlap to print on the text paper stock instead of on plates. Those 4 line drawings are crude by Harrison Cady's standards, compared to the line drawings he did for many other Burgess books.

This Dover edition has the 4 crude line drawings. Some other Dover editions have the illustrations from the B&W plates, and it would have been better if they had done that for this title too. But kudos to Dover for getting it basically right for this title.

If you like these illustrations, I'd recommend finding a used copy of the Little, Brown edition too -- mostly to get all 8 original drawings, but also to see them in color as Cady originally drew them.
Great fun! I love all of the Thornton Burgess animal stories, and have since childhood. I read them to my son when he was little, and now am going to be able to share them with my grandchildren. Old Granny Fox was a wise old fox with a lot to teach her impulsive grandson, Reddy. She does so within the context of the real life conditions that Burgess had observed in nature. And the lessons Reddy Fox (and readers) learn are never preachy, but taught in a practical, gentle manner. A child can laugh at the mishaps of Granny and Reddy while learning real life lessons about theft, gratitude for what one has, making do with less than ideal conditions, and kindness to others.I would definitely recommend any of the Burgess books for children from 3-8, and for older kids if they still like them. Always cheerful, always fun to read, always with a very gentle approach to teaching life lessons.
